COMPUTING

at Clyst Heath Nursery and Community Primary School

Intent

At Clyst Heath we aim to prepare all children for the digital world they inhabit. This includes exploring a wide range of technologies and processes that will set each child up for interacting in the world outside of school. As a part of this, every child will discuss and take part in a range of activities designed to show the impact of their actions in the digital world, considering how to become a great digital citizen. The children will become creators of their own digital content, and not just consumers of apps, across a variety of subjects and themes. During this they will become critical of the processes undertaken and learn how to select and problem solve the most suitable solutions to the tasks given. Finally, each child will explore the digital world, going behind the curtain to learn how to code for themselves.

Implementation

  • Introduction of the National Curriculum and support through staff training and CPD sessions
  • Creating a confident environment where both teachers and students can engage in discussion and activities to promote positive interactions with technology
  • Encourage discrete and cross curricular use of computing when appropriate; e.g. to provide purpose to our written tasks, bringing our ideas to life in a variety of ways
  • Ensuring the steps to success have been measured through benchmarks and assessments
  • Incorporating ‘Education for a Connected World’ into our Digital Literacy and PSHE planning

Impact

  • Children feel confident using, creating and consuming digital content in a safe and positive manner
  • Children can use language associated with computing and make links to other subjects and processes; e.g. understanding that a sequence of instructions is similar to an algorithm
  • Children have up-to-date skills to help navigate the digital world outside of school; e.g. by gaining positive interactions through our ‘social media’ styled digital learning platform
  • Children understand the difference between hardware and software, and can adapt their experiences to successfully navigate new equipment and scenarios
  • Children build their own resilience to the digital world, which includes being adaptable and able to debug (problem solve) any issues they encounter
